Why the Hell the Extraterrestrial?
Greetings. Unexplained occurrences are reported and talked about by people all around the world, on social media platforms and occasionally in person. While definitive answers to such alleged events are usually not a part of the intellectual exercise, one belief is embraced very quickly, in fact, almost immediately in many instances. The extraterrestrial.
Why is this so? Why is the extraterrestrial explanation embraced so often, to the exclusion of all other reasonable, and unreasonable possibilities? I haven't the foggiest idea, nor will I likely ever be able to explain the situation as it stands now, but the question is certainly worthy of consideration.
When a UFO allegation comes to light, it usually kicks off a spirited discussion about the story, but not from a dispassionate point of view. What happens, in the vast majority of cases, is a biased series of interactions that focus solely on the extraterrestrial explanation. Not hoaxes. Not birds. Not drones. Not weather activity. Not civilian or military apparatus. Not simple misidentifications of mundane phenomena. No, just the far less likely, far less evidence-supported extraterrestrial explanation. Such "debates" are essentially close-minded echo chambers, not measured, data and evidence-driven intellectual considerations. Such unsubstantiated "deliberations" are the norm in the UFO subculture.
Now to be clear, public exchanges about the UFO problem always tend to favor the extraterrestrial explanation, which is not unexpected when one remembers that the vast majority of the general public is not qualified to conduct scientific investigations of unexplained, potentially anomalous activity. However, the extraterrestrial explanation is the favorite answer for many UFO investigators too, even though many of them have a good amount of experience conducting examinations of alleged events and unexplained activity. Such a bias is detrimental to the scientific method, which is the only defensible approach to field investigations, regardless of the subject matter being scrutinized. Such a prejudice is strongly suggestive of a less than legitimate investigative effort. An unfortunate situation to say the least.
All of us are biased, imperfect bipedal hominids, no matter how much we attempt to stay impartial or objective. The best we can hope to do is to maintain a level of dispassion and move forward with that methodology held firmly in mind.
Thank you for your time and indulgence.
